• New Twitch features bonanza (tons!)
  • Riot finalizes streaming deal (Disney...wtf?)
  • South Korea cracks down on cheating (in games, bruh)

Well, that was quite the week. Twitch went all Santa Claus on us, dropping down our chimney, and burying us in new goodies. My sense is that this is a byproduct of the Amazon purchase and the integration between the two companies starting to ramp up. Individually the new features are cool, but collectively it’s a bonanza. We’ve captured everything (I think) below, so if you missed anything we’ve got you covered. There’s so much that this update is focused there, but what weekly update would be complete without another chapter in the ongoing Riot Games streaming saga? As usual, be sure to scroll to the bottom for this week’s ICYMI.

NEW TWITCH FEATURE BONANZA

RIOT GAMES FINALIZES DEAL WITH MLB / DISNEY

TL;DR: The story that broke about a month ago has come full circle and Riot has finalized its deal with MLB and, wait for it...Disney, for exclusive streaming rights of League of Legends. Through a media subsidiary known as BAMTech, Riot will receive $300 million through 2023 for the “streaming and monetization” rights to LoL. There is already talk of a standalone app, and it doesn’t look like Twitch and YouTube are being left out (yet).

YOUTUBE BECOMES FIRST PLATFORM TO SUPPORT 4K LIVE-STREAMING

TL;DR: YouTube has supported 4k since 2010 but will now be supporting it through it’s live-streaming platform. It’s reported that Twitch’s relative slowness to support 4k live-streaming is due to bandwidth issues.

PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN SOCCER CLUB ENTERS ESPORTS ARENA

TL;DR: France’s most successful soccer club has fielded a team for the 2017 LoL Challenger Series and a solid roster to boot. There are already talks that they’re a sure bet to qualify for the EU LCS.

SOUTH KOREA GETS SERIOUS, REALLY SERIOUS, ABOUT CHEATING IN VIDEO GAMES

TL;DR: An amendment to a South Korean law recently passed by Parliament now makes it a crime to “manufacture and distribute” any programs prohibited by a game company’s terms of use. Aimbotters, scripters, and hackers of all sort can now face up to 5 years in prison or $43k in fines.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT…

By now just about everyone has heard of or has played CD Projekt RED’s Witcher series. It’s a beloved series by fans and newcomers alike, even spawning a standalone version of the Gwent card game that was a massively popular in-game feature.

Apparently the Polish government are fans too. The game studio received the largest portion of the country’s PLN fund, which is granted by the National Center for Research and Development (NCBR).

CDPR is bringing home roughly $7 million USD for future development in the following areas:

  • City creation
  • Seamless multiplayer
  • Cinematic feel
  • Animation excellence

Other studios were awarded as well but CDPR was the clear favorite. You can get the full story along with additional details here.
